Explosions in Kyiv, mayor says city 'under ballistic missile attack'

Kyiv, Ukraine, July 31, 2026 (AFP) AFP

Explosions were heard in Kyiv early Saturday as the city's mayor said the Ukrainian capital was being attacked by ballistic missiles.

"Explosions in the city. Kyiv is under ballistic missile attack. Stay in shelters!" Vitali Klitschko said. An AFP journalist also reported hearing explosions.

More than 10 explosions were heard in a row, AFP journalists reported, adding that the intensity of the blasts triggered car alarms on the streets.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky met with US President Donald Trump earlier this week for talks that came as Kyiv and Moscow intensify long-range strikes after US-led diplomatic efforts to end the war stalled.

Zelensky said following the meeting that Trump had agreed to license the production of Patriot missiles to Ukraine, but the US president only said that "many things were discussed" and "the meeting went very well!"
